Enrolling in College
Moving to College Checklist
Use this relocation planner to break down the task of moving to college into manageable steps.
- Take only what you need
Moving into a dorm or shared housing can provide a lesson in how little you actually need. Focus on essentials such as clothing, personal care items, a small TV, a computer or tablet, bike, and a few books. - Get boxes and packing materials
Most big-box retail and grocery stores are happy to let customers have packing boxes and crates. For packing material, use crumpled up newspaper, towels, or old blankets. - Start packing early.
Take the pressure off by starting a couple weeks before your move date. - Determine how you and your belongings will make the trip.
The best method depends on how much you’re bringing with you, how far away your destination is, and how much money you can afford to spend on transportation. - Open a bank account (if you don’t already have one)
You will need a place to receive loan funds, pay bills, and manage your money. - Set up new services
Be sure you’ve arranged to have utilities, internet, cable, and other services connected if you’re living off-campus. Also, fill out a change of address form with the United States Postal Service. - Take care of your employment needs
If you will be working, transfer or find a new job near campus or your housing. - Complete the required paperwork
If you’re renting, complete your landlord’s inventory list. If you’re moving to a new state, check on relevant laws concerning driver’s licenses, car registration, and car insurance.
