Preparing for College
Degree and College Choices
You don’t need to settle on a degree right away, but it is important to explore your career interests and match them to the degree or certificate you will need. There are a number of things to keep in mind.
- Start broad
Work with your high school counselor to take skill and interest tests. These tests show how you compare to people in different careers. - Narrow your choices
Get advice from people who work in careers that interest you. They can help you get an idea of the skills and abilities you’ll need. - Research the type of degree or certificate you will need
There are often minimum education requirements. - Determine if ‘where you go’ is as important as ‘what you learn’
College program quality and reputation can vary. Some careers offer greater potential to students with degrees from top tier schools.
